Delegate Dash Alternate Rules

Delegate Dash can be played in a variety of ways and you're encouraged to use different rules of the game to enhance your experience!  As long as "all candidates" agree on which rules you are using, feel free to incorporate any or all of the following alternate rules!

If you have other rules not listed below that you like to incorporate, we would love to hear your ideas and add them to this list!  Please message us here or at info@delegatedash.com to share your experience!

Alternate Rule#1: Starting configuration

The beginning /set-up of the game can be adjusted to any of the following variations:

  • Instead of 9 total cards at the beginning of the game (8 cards + 1 Veto!), each candidate starts with 6 (or any # of) total cards
  • At the beginning of the game, no Veto! cards are distributed
  • At the beginning of the game, each candidate starts with one randomly drawn incumbent card
  • At the beginning of the game, the person whose birthday is closest to the next Primary Election goes first
  • Another method may be chosen to determine which candidate goes first

Alternate Rule#2: Order of Play

Instead of "lowest dice roll" determining the order of play, the following variations may be made:

  • Lowest roll determines who goes first through Round 4. Whoever is leading in number of Winner! points after Round 4 goes first in Rounds 5-8.  Whoever is leading in number of Winner! points after Round 8 goes first in Rounds 9-13.
  • Lowest roll determines who goes first through Round 4. The order of play for Rounds 5-8 is determined by Winner! point score from Primary Election scores after Round 4. (E.g. first place goes first, second place goes second, etc.) Repeat this same methodology after Round 8 for Rounds 9-13.
  • Candidates may determine alternative methods of the order of play.

Alternate Rule#3: Delegate limits

Delegate Dash can be played to modify and/or remove any of the following delegate limitations:

  • The 10 delegate limit per candidate
  • The total delegate limit allowed per region

Furthermore, you can enforce even stricter delegate limits if you want (e.g. 8 delegates per candidate per region, 10 total delegates allowed per region for a 2 candidate game)

Alternate Rule#4: Veto! Cards

Veto! Card rules can be adjusted as follows:

  • Instead of "no change given" from residual money spent on buying Veto! Cards, candidates can spend residual money on delegates (up to 2 max)
  • Instead of being returned to the Veto! Bank, all Green Veto! cards are discarded after use

Alternate Rule#5: Primary Elections

On Primary Election Day rounds, instead of starting with the lowest Winner! Point value region (The Appalachian region) and continuing in ascending order:

  • Conduct regional rolls with the highest point value first (starting with California) and proceed in descending order
  • Conduct regional rolls with the regions in the farthest EAST and proceed across the map from East to West
  • Conduct regional rolls with the regions in the farthest WEST and proceed across the map from West to East
  • Shuffle Winner! Cards and conduct rolls randomly based on the draw of cards
  • Choose another method to determine the order of Election rolls

Alternate Rule#6: Other Variations

The following rules may be also implemented to enhance your Delegate Dash experience:

  • After each Primary Election roll (Rounds 4, 8 and 13), update the current Winner! Point score on the game board for all candidates
  • For ADVANCED play on Round 9 (Presidential Debates), change the amount that can be spent from $6M to $8M.
  • Use alternate game markers (included in Game expansions or bonuses) to track the game round on the board.
  • Use expansion packs with base game for more card variety!

Delegate Dash Team Play Rules

Delegate Dash can be played in teams to include more than 4 players at the same time, which is great to play in a classroom environment, gamenight party or any case where more than 4 players want to play simultaneously.  Team play can also be played with 4 players who want to play against each other as teams of 2 and there are two main ways that Delegate Dash can be played in teams.  Each is explained below.

Team Play with up to 16 players simultaneously (Good for a classroom environment!)

In this version, teams with as many as 4 players on a team will collectively play their cards by working together and strategically planning their campaign moves. In this version, it is suggested to do the following:

  1. Place the board game map in a central location so that all players on all teams can see the delegate assignments.
  2. Limit teams to 60 seconds to do their three actions.  The timer is paused if Veto! cards are played or other teams are involved on your turn.
  3. Encourage all members of all teams to actively participate in game play.  This can include tracking of delegates, planning map strategy, rolling dice, keeping track of cards or other tasks.
  4. Refer to FAQs of this website to see which cards are modified for TEAM play.

Team Play "Running Mate" Version

An exciting way to play Delegate Dash is with "Running Mates."  In this version, up to 8 players can play simultaneously.  In this version, 2 players will each play for the same party (color) but each player will have their own cards in hand.  There must be an even number of players to play this version and players alternate so that no party gets to play two consecutive turns.  Rules and objectives are the same except for the following differences:

  • Each player is initially dealt 7 cards.  Players can not show their hand to other players, even if on the same team.
  • Each TEAM starts with one green Veto! card and teams can decide which player will hold that card.
  • Each player performs TWO actions on their turn instead of three.
  • Each player draws TWO cards at the end of their turn instead of three.
  • Refer to the FAQs of this website to see what cards are modified for TEAM play.

All other rules are the same!  The objective is to get your team elected as President and Vice-President at the end!
